Amazing Cultural Week
Our Cultural Week was a great success with classes coming together to share their learning about different festivals; whilst working collaboratively on a variety of craft projects.
Years 5 and 6 taught us all about ‘Day of the Dead’ and the significance of the different colours used to decorate the masks they wear to symbolise the nature of how they are feeling. Years 3 and 4 shared their knowledge of Chinese New Year and how to make Chinese fans and drums. Finally the children explored Divali, by making diva lamps with Year 1 and 2, and drawing Rangoli patterns in Year R. Teachers commented positively on the collaboration between year groups. The children had the opportunity to and build relationships; this is certainly an approach we will continue to develop.
We were also very lucky to have visits from several parents who shared their experiences of other countries and cultures. This included presentations about Africa, Finland, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka and Poland, Spanish lessons for our youngest children and a didgeridoo demonstration.
We appreciate all the parental involvement; they really inspired the children who have widened their understanding of the world around them. Each day concluded with a ‘Zumbathon’ - lead by Mrs Taylor and Mrs Blackman, another thoroughly enjoyable part of the day.
We are sure that all of the family members that joined us on Thursday afternoon would agree that the children have really been inspired by this week. In the words of school councillor Neve: "It was a great week where everyone got involved and we showed our core values of Oneness and Understanding".
